Meet the Teachers

SONY DSCLauren Poirier Elliott, Director & Lead Teacher
M.Ed. Early Childhood Education,
Certified CLASS Pre-K Observer

Lauren Elliott has a M.Ed in Early Childhood Education and brings a range of experiences together to create the early childhood education program at Swaha Yoga Center. Research shows that young children learn best when they are actively engaged with others and the world and when imagination and creativity are a central medium for learning. Built on research and her own experience as a preschool teacher, she has created a play-centered curriculum that allows children to explore their own interests & questions through play in an open and supported environment.

Lauren has diverse and extensive experience in the field: in addition to having a graduate degree in education, she completed her thesis work on young children’s play and the imagination, taught Montessori preschool, studied and observed in Reggio Emilia preschools, taught in private toddler programs, and student-taught in first grade at Lusher Charter School. She is also a certified Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS) Pre-K Observer and has worked assessing publicly-funded preschool classrooms for the last three years.

Lauren believes that teachers of young children must prioritize learning how each child experiences and makes sense of their world. There is no one-size-fits-all curriculum that can support all children. Instead the teacher learns about each child’s evolving loves, fears, questions, dreams, and struggles, and builds the curriculum out of these.

Lauren practices meditation in daily life and in extended silent meditation retreats. She has taught meditation to both adults and children. Her mindfulness practice greatly influences her work with children, both in how she relates to them and how she supports their own emotional growth.

I started my journey of teaching as a special education play therapist and learned so much about the beauty and power of using play as a tool for kids to grow, learn, and socialize!

While teaching, I began to study yoga and slowly brought these philosophies and tools into the classroom. I now have the privilege of being a special education yoga teacher. These skills have taught me so much about relating to babies and holding space and calmness in the classroom.  I have continued to hold a daily yoga practice, having studied and taught Kundalini yoga for 7 years. Working with kids has continued to inspire and humble me.
